Sharknado’s Cassie Scerbo Making a splash

By Deborah Wilker

When the Syfy channel gifted us with the instant camp classic Sharknado last summer, odds were producers weren’t thinking about such Hollywood traditions as “awards season.”

But Sharknado – about a freak storm that propels sharks into the air and onto streets – does indeed find itself in the running for Favorite TV Movie/Miniseries at the upcoming People’s Choice Awards.

OK, it’s not The Oscars; but it could still mean another trip down the red carpet for Parkland actress Cassie Scerbo, who co-starred as Nova Clarke in the deliberately cheesy sharkfest.

At press time, Scerbo and castmates Ian Ziering and Tara Reid were still waiting for the results of People’s Choice voting – a tally derived from everyday TV viewers, movie-goers and concert fans weighing in on their favorites.

Scerbo, 23, who began traveling regularly from her home in South Florida to Los Angeles for acting roles while in her mid-teens, says she’s “a realist.”

“I know I’m a small fish in a big pond, but acting is something I have always wanted to do,” she says of her now fulltime life in L.A.

Prior to Sharknado, Scerbo played Lauren on ABC Family’s Make It or Break It, and has also been seen on Hot In Cleveland, CSI: Miami and in the straight-to-DVD cheerleading sequel Bring It On: In It To Win It. Her newest role is an arc on the ABC Family series Baby Daddy.

In town recently to visit family and thank friends Ed and Tracey Dikes (owners of Weston Jewelers), Scerbo said she is taking her burgeoning acting career one measured step at a time.

Life “is hectic” in L.A. she says, so she keeps herself calm and looking her best for last-minute auditions with lots of water, exercise, “six mini-meals” a day, regular communication with her family in Parkland – and a constant stream of “positive thought.”

“If you don’t have thick skin do not even try to be in this industry,” Scerbo says with a laugh. Much like a Sharknado, “this business can tear you apart.”
