It’s no wonder Martin Amado has been called the “Makeover Maestro.”

He first put his distinctive mark on South Florida design with Room for Improvement on WSVN-Ch. 7. Amado has since moved on as host of the SoFlo Home Project on WPLG-Ch. 10 and his first book, One Day Room Makeovers – How to Get the Designer Look for Less with Three Easy Steps, will be published in July.  He is currently host of ION@Home segments seen on ION Television and is a home décor contributor to Un Nuevo Día, Telemundo’s national morning program.

Amado recognizes not all of us have the means to totally redecorate every three to five years but most of us could use a refresh now and then, he says. We asked how he would suggest getting a new look without spending a fortune.

Is furniture crowding your room?

“You may have to do some math and subtract some pieces. Look for space savers such as an ottoman for extra seating, armless chairs and sofas on legs.”

Want a new look with the same furniture?

“Rearrange what you have and add a new table lamp, toss pillows and an area rug.”

How about our outdoor spaces?

“Whether you have a garden or just a balcony you can add a comfortable seating area with furniture such as woven plastics that resemble wicker, garden stools, hurricane candle lanterns and water features.”

How can I find my clothes easier in the closets?

“Group your clothing by categories and color. Fold jeans and T-shirts and put them on shelves to save space for hanging. Install double rods and hooks for belts, purses and ties.”

How do I spice up the bedroom?

“Remember your bed is the focal point. Paint the wall behind the bed in an accent color or wallpaper just that wall. Another attention getter is using wood planks as a headboard, a good idea for small bedrooms. Finally, layer your bed with quilts, duvets, euro shams and decorative pillows to get the look of a five-star hotel.”
