Contemporary design reigns at LaRue

By Charlyne Varkonyi Schaub

Tim Maynard and Rod LaRue were meant to be business partners. The friends shared a love for the furniture business in Michigan that continues in South Florida. LaRue came down first and opened LaRue Furniture in Delray Beach in 1986. Maynard followed.

Maynard says they built their business on the surrounding communities that are geared to 55 and older buyers. They started with Kings Point and their business prospered as more developments were built.

“We have grown with the need,” Maynard says, noting the showroom increased from 5,000 to more than 40,000 square feet in the same location. “We know what our clientele wants, and we have every single floor plan for every development. We try to buy accordingly.”

City & Shore: What special services do you offer?

Tim Maynard: You do not need a designer at LaRue. When a customer walks into our store we have their floor plan. Our designers lay out the plan for them, color coordinate everything and make sure all the pieces fit. We can go to the home and do a free consultation if needed. After it is purchased and delivered we can go to the home again to fine-tune it if requested. We try to take the headache out of the furniture purchase.

C&S: What are the latest trends?

TM: Contemporary. We were contemporary before contemporary was so stylish.

C&S: What price range are you in?

TM: We don’t carry promotional or inexpensive furniture. We are not looking for the clientele that goes to Rooms to Go or City Furniture. We are high middle with brands such as Lazar and Weiman. Our customers live in homes from $300,000 to $800,000 and they typically spend 20 percent of their purchase price on furnishings.

C&S: What are your favorite things right now?

TM: Entertainment centers are very popular for 60-, 65- and 75-inch TVs. They are elegant and can be customized to your own taste. Sectionals are sleek contemporary. I love the red-lipstick sofa.

C&S: What is your delivery time?

TM: Special orders are delivered in six to eight weeks. People often come in here right after they go to contract so we will have the furniture in plenty of time for when they move in.

C&S: What is your motto?

Where service makes the difference.

C&S: Is there anything else that is important?

TM: We are a family business that has been here for 29 years. Monday through Friday, my door is always open. It says something if you know an owner is there. We may share a cup of coffee. There is a comfort level here.
