By Greg Carannante

City & Shore HOME Issue

Way back before working from home became a business model, Steven Gurowitz built one of South Florida’s most prominent interior design firms from his living room — and built a name for himself as Steven G.

The 19-year-old arrived in South Florida 50 years go after graduating high school in Queens, N.Y., finding work driving trucks and delivering furniture for an interior design boutique. There, he began to regard the way interior designers worked, eventually developing projects and  educating himself in style and interior design by studying art and architecture in books, magazines and catalogs.

A passion was sparked that grew into Interiors by Steven G, evolving over 40 years into one of the region’s most successful and versatile full-service interior design firms. Among its clients are Fortune 500 companies, prominent real estate firms, renowned developers, professional athletes and residential homeowners throughout the country. Based in a 110,000 square-foot showroom in Pompano Beach, Steven G leads a team of over 85 professionals in projects that range from homes to hotels and restaurants to commercial offices.

A half-century after landing in South Florida, the Miami resident cleared his schedule for a few minutes to answer our recurring series of Quote Unquote questions.

Aside from the weather, what do you enjoy most about South Florida?

I love the casual lifestyle! I love to be able to walk into a nice restaurant and not have to be dressed up, and feel like it’s home.

Aside from the weather, what do you dislike most about South Florida?

Preparing for Hurricane Season. It’s always stressful, as you need to be ready! Having to make sure that you have proper supplies, dealing with the last-minute standing in line, or not being able to find what you need can be challenging.

Are you a beach person or a pool person?

Most definitely love the beach! I love the sand under my feet, the breeze off the ocean, the salt on my body. It feels so therapeutic.

When in your life are you or have you been the happiest?

There are many times that I am the happiest, but I have to admit that there’s no place like being on my boat on the water.

What do you do when you’re stuck in a traffic jam on I-95?

I’m so used to traffic on I-95 as I travel to and from work daily. When I’m stuck in traffic, I like to turn my radio up very loud and play the music that I enjoy because it helps pass the time.

What music are you listening to now?

One of the first things that I do when I walk into my office is turn on music, as I cannot work without music! Currently what’s playing is Johnny Maestro & the Brooklyn Bridge.

Are you a fan, and if so, of what?

As it relates to music, I like all genres. It has to do with my mood. I grew up on Motown, and I continue to listen to Motown 80 percent of the time. It’s feel-good music!

If you had to choose: Beatles or Stones?

If I had to choose, it would definitely be the Beatles. I love the Stones, though!

What are your social media usernames?

Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok: @interiorsbysteveng; Twitter: @IntByStevenG

Apple or Android?

Who is your real-life hero or heroine?

Wow, that’s a tough question! I’d have to say my dad. He was a World War II disabled American veteran, so it makes me proud.

What car are you driving now?

Today I am driving a Mercedes-AMG G63.

If you had to choose: Rocky or Raging Bull?

Another tough question. Raging Bull was a true story, and Rocky was a fantastic fictional character. With that said, my answer would be Rocky.

What do you like most about yourself?

I love to help those less fortunate, thus, my amazing relationship with Embrace Girls Foundation. They have my heart.

What places in South Florida do you recommend to guests visiting from out-of-town?

The Florida Keys. I love it there! Most people who go, even for a day or overnight, come back with a great sense of warmth and comfort.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

If I could change one thing about myself, it would have to be that I was 20 years younger.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

My greatest achievement would definitely have to be building my firm from the den of my home!
