Are you looking to hit the cultural trifecta – to be educated, enlightened and entertained all in an evening? Then mark your calendars now for the 2015-16 Broward College Speaker Series to be presented by Hoffman’s Chocolates and sponsored by Exults Internet Marketing at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.
As impressive as last year’s program was with the likes of historian Doris Kearns Goodwin and sportscaster Chris Berman, this year’s lineup has been even more crowd-pleasing. J.C. Watts (March 23) and James Carville (April 6) are the next two speakers to share their experiences, insight and points of view.
“Our general guideline when we select speakers is that we want diversity of thoughts and opinions,” says Broward College President J. David Armstrong Jr., “and we want to stimulate conversation on campus and off.”
The series, co-sponsored by City & Shore Magazine and the Sun-Sentinel, includes a question-and-answer session will follow each speech.
Watts, after quarterbacking Oklahoma to consecutive Orange Bowl victories, became an ordained minister, a U.S. congressman, chairman of the House Republican Conference and chairman of Watts Partners, the largest African-American-owned lobbying firm in Washington, D.C. His speaking topic: “Leadership Lessons from the Sidelines and the Aisles of Congress.”
Carville, “The Ragin’ Cajun,” is one of America’s best-known political consultants. His shoot-from-the-hip political commentary delivered with a Southern drawl is instantly recognizable from appearances on network news programs. He has worked on international campaigns in more than 23 countries, written numerous books and is a professor in the Department of Political Science at Tulane University. His speaker topic: “James Carville Looks at Politics and the 2016 Race for the White House.”
“There hasn’t been a speaker series like ours in South Florida in many years,” Armstrong says. “Business leaders, elected officials, students and faculty have all told me how much they appreciate Broward College bringing these stimulating speakers with different ideas to the community.”
