Lisa Todd celebrating 25 years in Boca Raton

To say that Lisa Shapiro has fashion in her blood is an understatement. She was literally born into the fashion and retail industries – her grandfather had a small chain of department stores in the Midwest, her father owned drugstores and her uncle was involved with a fashion retailer with over 300 shops nationwide.

So it’s no surprise that Shapiro has been a successful retailer and fashion designer since graduating from Indiana University and joining the Burdines executive training program some 35 years ago.

In March, Shapiro will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the opening of her iconic Lisa Todd boutique in Boca Raton. Since opening, the store, which specializes in women’s apparel, has undergone three expansions, growing from 1,800 square feet to a 5,000-square-foot showcase that today features not only the designs of other companies, but Shapiro’s own designs as well.

Originally specializing in clothing for plus-sized women — a segment Shapiro says was ignored by luxury designers at the time – Lisa Todd has evolved over the past few years to feature designs for every woman. “It’s no longer about a size,” Shapiro says. “It’s about having great pieces.”

While managing her boutiques, Shapiro also designed private label clothing for other manufacturers. In the past three years, however, she’s been designing her own line, Lisa Todd Now, which is sold in almost 300 specialty stores throughout the United States and Canada, including Neiman Marcus; and is scheduled for distribution in Europe this year.

“The collection runs extra small to extra large,” Shapiro says. “It’s been an evolution, and it’s been wonderful coming up with a product that has such a universal appeal.”

Shapiro says she will celebrate the anniversary of the Boca Raton store all month long in March. There will be specials, as well as guest appearances by designers and celebrities. “We’re going to have a lot of fun,” she says. “Not everybody makes it to 25 years, so we’re certainly going to be celebrating this one.”
