Smart TV Unit gives tiny spaces big results

Whether you have a small apartment or are considering downsizing, you may want to consider these space-saving furnishings from Europe.

“The Italians and other Europeans are very familiar with small spaces,” says Pat Howard, who owns Sklar Furnishings in Boca Raton with her husband, Rick. “Some of our most innovative and creative furnishings are coming directly from them.”

When I saw the “Smart TV Unit” at a demonstration in the Sklar showroom, I wished I’d had a time machine to go back to my first apartment. Like many of my friends back then, I didn’t entertain a lot so we really didn’t need to have a full table and chairs taking up space. We ate in front of the TV.

“You have to see it to believe it,” Howard says. “At first glance it is an ordinary wall unit with a TV mounted on it. Wrong. With a simple touch the TV swings out. Behind the wall is an extension table complete with six dining chairs. This is perfect for a loft where all you have room for is a sofa and a wall unit. Set up the dining furniture when you need it. The rest of the time it is tucked behind the TV.”

Another space saver is Sklar’s 4-by-4 foot table that can expand so it can seat eight or 14 comfortably. The leaves are hidden inside the table so there’s no need for extra storage.

The Smart TV Unit starts at $8,695 and the table starts at $5,995. They may be pricey, but think of the money you’ll save in rent and buying other furniture. Buy a sofa bed, and you’re set.
