Getting to Cassia at Ocean Reef is part of the fun. Drive in from Miami, south on U.S. 1 to Card Sound Road, past the picturesquely crusty Alabama Jack’s and over the Card Sound Toll Bridge, and you’ll be at Ocean Reef’s gate in an hour. Boat in from Miami Beach and you’ll tie up at the exclusive resort’s private dock on the northern tip of Key Largo in an hour and a half. Jet in from MIA, just 28 nautical miles away, and you’ll be there before you can lower and raise your seat backs and tray tables. (Jet in? Yes. Ocean Reef has its own 4,456-foot private runway, scene of the aeronautical portion of the annual Vintage Weekend in December).
Past the security gate, follow South Harbor Drive by the new Fitness Center and Spa at Ocean Reef, make a left on Cinnamon Bark Lane (past the residence where President Obama spent the night on a recent vacation) to the 17 homes on either side of the road ending in a cul de sac. Each home, with architectural nods to Key West, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, is set back from the road – and from the neighbors – by lush native plants and trees. The 5- or 6-bedroom, 5 ½ to 7 ½ bath homes range from 3,938 to 5,942 square feet on lots ranging from 16,900 to 23,094 square feet. Amenities include over-sized kitchen, private elevator, indoor pool, 10-foot ceilings throughout, four different floor plans and designer options. And, outside, amenities at Ocean Reef include world-class golf courses, pool, a beach, restaurants, shopping, fishing village, security, 175-slip marina and the aforementioned private airport. All good reasons to stay at Cassia at Ocean Reef, however you get there.
