C&S wins state, regional, national awards

By Mark Gauert

Editor, City & Shore Magazine

We don’t put out the magazine each month to win awards. (We’d rather win readers). But it’s nice – and humbling – to be recognized for the work we do to win readers.

Since last issue we’ve learned City & Shore has won six state, regional and national awards, from the state Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), the Florida Magazine Association, the Southeast regional SPJ Green Eyeshade Awards and the national Society for Features Journalism.

The magazine on Aug. 4 won three awards at the Society of Professional Journalists South Florida Pro Chapter’s 24th Annual Sunshine State Awards, “recognizing the best in Florida journalism.” The magazine won 1st place in the state in the “Special Interest Publication” category for City & Shore PRIME; 1st place for Commentary & Criticism for the First Words column and 2nd place for Cover Design. The First Words column also won Second Place for Humorous Commentary in SPJ’s 68th Annual Green Eyeshade Awards, “in recognition of the best journalism in the Southeastern United States.” (See links below to the winning entries, also available online at

Also in June, the magazine won second for Best Niche Publication from the national Society of Features Journalism for City & Shore PRIME. Of the entries, which included the May and August 2017 issues of the magazine, the judges said, “Stunning covers … invite readers in. The mix of short takes and longer pieces keeps them there. Loved the piece on five places to escape to before the summer fades away. Overall, a strong effort.” The annual awards, “[honor] the craft of feature storytelling.”

City & Shore also won the Charlie Award for “Best Writing: Feature Headlines” from the Florida Magazine Association. The FMA’s top award, “recognizing publishing excellence in the state of Florida,” was announced Aug. 10 at the Florida Media Conference in Orlando.

City & Shore has won 50 state, regional and national journalism awards in the past seven years, including First Place awards for Niche Publication, Commentary/Criticism, Headlines, and Cover and Inside Design. Some of the winning entries appear here; links to all the stories appear online at; and on the City & Shore Facebook page,
