Critic’s choice: Face the music, and dance

By Greg Carannante

City & Shore Magazine

A new year — another free-swinging series of Miami City Ballet programs. Among the highlights this month is Program Two’s pairing of company premieres (concluding Jan 12 at the Arsht Center before moving to the Kravis Center Jan. Jan. 17-19 and Broward Center Jan. 25-25): Christopher Wheeldon’s riveting This Bitter Earth, set to the haunting music of Max Richter and Dinah Washington; and Jerome Robbins’ stunning I’m Old Fashioned, in which dancers onstage are accompanied by Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth gliding alongside on a huge screen in a glamorous tribute to Hollywood’s Golden Age. The glamor goes full swing in Program Three (Feb. 14-March 1, 2020) as couples in fabulous Oscar de la Renta costumes swirl to the sounds of Nine Sinatra Songs by Twyla Tharp.
