Fresh from the Food Network’s Cutthroat Kitchen, Kate von Schledorn – better known as Kate Von – is now teaching others how to cook with local produce from her new home in West Palm Beach. For our June “Made in South Florida’’ issue, the master chef, specializing in plant-based cuisine, shares her recipes, the secrets of shopping local Farmers Markets, and her observations about life at home in Palm Beach.
No names here, but certain outsiders think we don’t actually make anything in Florida. (We can take some mild ribbing. We’re like that). So challenged, we did some scouting and found a good 10 things made here. (Take that, New York!)
Once inspired by Miami Vice, then the Mediterranean, we also found that “South Florida style” today has turned to clean, sleek contemporary – with well-edited accessories. (Need ideas? Contributing Design Editor Charlyne Varkonyi Schaub is here with inspiration).
Some magazines may go to Iceland to photograph fashion stories (Iceland?). But, our June Style File goes to the Bonnet House in Fort Lauderdale for a fashion show of masterpiece gowns, all made in South Florida; and Food & Dining Writer Rebecca Cahilly-Taranto also sits down for dinner with Charles Grippo and Elena Pezzo, who had their own personal reasons for switching to a plant-based diet and healthier lifestyle a few years ago. Now, they share their experience, expertise – and table at Green Bar & Kitchen in Fort Lauderdale.
All that – plus our picks of the best movies set in South Florida, just in time for the debut of Baywatch – in the June issue of City & Shore, in print, online at http://www.cityandshore.com/and on iPad on June 4.
