City & Shore Magazine wins 2017 awards

City & Shore Magazine has been honored with 10 awards this year – for Best Single Issue, Commentary & Criticism, Cover Design, Trade/Special Interest Publication, Humor Writing, Serious Feature Writing and Specialty Articles – from the state Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), the Florida Magazine Association (FMA), the Florida Press Club and the Society of Professional Journalists’ Southeast regional Green Eyeshade Awards.

In SPJ competition “recognizing the best in Florida journalism,’’ the magazine in July won First Place in the Single Issue category, First Place in the Commentary & Criticism Category, for Editor Mark Gauert’s “First Words’’ column; Third Place to Art Director/Designer Anderson Greene for Cover Design and Third Place in the Trade/Special Interest Publication category. Gauert in August won the Bronze Award for Best Writing in the Humor category from FMA, “recognizing publishing excellence in the state of Florida.”

The Florida Press Club (FPC) also announced Oct. 2 that Gauert is a finalist for an FPC award in the commentary category; and writer Greg Carannante is a finalist in the Serious Feature Writing category for his story in May on Bruce Springsteen,  http://www.cityandshore.com/features/people/into-the-darkness-on-the-edge-of-bruce-springsteen. The winners will be announced Nov. 4 at the organization’s annual gala in Sarasota.

“We don’t put out the magazine each month to win awards – we’d rather win readers,” Gauert said. “But it’s nice – and humbling – to be recognized for the work we do to win readers.”

City & Shore Magazine real estate and financial columnist Robyn A. Friedman was honored with two writing awards in March from the National Federation of Press Women. Friedman won first place in the “Specialty Articles-Home” category for her On the Money columns “Five Tips for Choosing a Financial Advisor,” http://bit.ly/2njqYDi; and “Florida Residency Makes Financial, Tax Sense,” http://bit.ly/2obn2IY.

Gauert won Second Place in May in the Green Eyeshade Awards, the Society of Professional Journalists’ recognition of the best journalism in the Southeastern United States, in the Humorous Commentary/Magazines category.

City & Shore has won 44 state, regional and national journalism awards in the past six years, including First Place awards for Niche Publication, Commentary/Criticism, Cover and Inside Design.
