City & Shore Magazine has been honored with five awards this summer – for Best Single Issue, Commentary & Criticism, Cover Design, Trade/Special Interest Publication and Humor Writing – from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) at the 23rd Annual Sunshine State Awards, (7/22) at the Newman Alumni Center at the University of Miami; and the annual Florida Magazine Association (FMA) Charlie Awards, 8/11 at the Ritz-Carlton, Naples.
In competition “recognizing the best in Florida journalism,’’ the magazine won First Place in the Single Issue category, First Place in the Commentary & Criticism Category, for Editor Mark Gauert’s “First Words’’ column; Third Place to Art Director/Designer Anderson Greene for Cover Design and Third Place in the Trade/Special Interest Publication category. Gauert also won the Bronze Award for Best Writing in the Humor category from FMA, “recognizing publishing excellence in the state of Florida.”
“We don’t put out the magazine each month to win awards – we’d rather win readers,” Gauert said. “But it’s nice – and humbling – to be recognized for the work we do to win readers.”
City & Shore Magazine real estate and financial columnist Robyn A. Friedman was honored with two writing awards in March from the National Federation of Press Women. Friedman won first place in the “Specialty Articles-Home” category for her On the Money columns “Five Tips for Choosing a Financial Advisor,” http://bit.ly/2njqYDi; and “Florida Residency Makes Financial, Tax Sense,” http://bit.ly/2obn2IY. The First Place entry in the At Large Division now moves on to national competition, with winners announced in September.
Gauert won Second Place in May in the Green Eyeshade Awards, the Society of Professional Journalists’ recognition of the best journalism in the Southeastern United States, in the Humorous Commentary/Magazines category.
City & Shore has won 42 state, regional and national journalism awards in the past six years, including First Place awards for Niche Publication, Commentary/Criticism, Cover and Inside Design.
