Most people are familiar with the Miss America pageant each year in Atlantic City – but there’s also a pageant celebrating contestants age 60 and over.
The 45th Annual Ms. Senior America pageant will be in Atlantic City on Oct. 19, but the women representing Florida will be selected Aug. 6 at the Ms. Senior Florida Pageant in North Miami Beach. This is the first year the event is being held in South Florida; it previously took place in Vero Beach.
“This competition is to seek out, honor and recognize seniors for all that they have contributed to family as well as community,” says Rose Tydus, 70, Ms. Senior Florida 2016 and the state pageant director. “They are looking for inward beauty more than outward beauty. If you happen to have both, that’s a plus.”
Ten contestants will compete in four categories at the statewide pageant: evening gowns, a 45-second presentation on their philosophy of life, a five-minute interview with the judges and talent. The winner will move onto the national competition in October.
“It’s an inspirational and entertaining event, and it honors our seniors for what they have contributed all of their lives,” Tydus says.
