21 More than 800 runners and walkers are expected at the 9th Annual Covenant House Florida 5-K on A1A, hosted by the Young Professionals for Covenant House. 29  More than 3,000 walkers and runners will make strides in the fight against drunk driving during the 8th Annual La Croix & Lennox National Account Services Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5-K, Brought to You by Ultimate Software, which includes children’s activities, an awards ceremony, live music, vendors, educational booths and appearances by local dignitaries. 6 a.m., registration; 7:30 a.m., start time, at Huizenga Park, 32 E. 5 The 2018 American Cancer Society’s Celebration Gala, an evening of cocktails, auctions, dinner and dancing. This year’s theme is “Let’s Fiesta.” 6:30 p.m. at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa, 3030 Holiday Drive. $300. 954-200-7520, 

5 The American Fine Wine Competition’s 11th annual Charity Wine Gala. More than 600 award-winning wines will be poured at the event, accompanied by a dazzling feast, winery-tasting rooms hosted by the winemakers, “wine maker of the year’’ awards, auctions, music and celebrations. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Autism Society of Florida. 6:30 p.m. at the Pier Sixty-Six Hotel & Marina, Fort Lauderdale, 561-504-0206, 

5 The 30th Night of Literary Feasts Welcome Reception and Dinners, an event that has raised more than $3 million since it began in 1988, with a mission of supporting Broward County Library literacy programs. The Feast begins at 5:30 with a gala Welcome Reception at the Pier Sixty-Six Hotel & Marina, complete with open bar, hors d’oeuvres, book sales and signings and a silent auction. At 7:30, guests depart for dinners featuring an author hosted in private homes or upscale restaurants. Tickets start at $175. 

5 The Plantation Democratic Club honors Sheriff Scott Israel with the Sixth Annual William “Bill” Kling Community Service Award. 5:30 p.m. at Volunteer Park’s Banquet Room, 12050 W. Sunrise Blvd., Plantation. The evening includes an open bar, hors d’oeuvres and a buffet dinner. $50. 954-232-3918,

5-6 The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds headline the Ford Lauderdale Air Show on Fort Lauderdale Beach, also featuring military jet demonstrations, parachute teams, civilian aerobatic acts and formation flight teams. Times vary. Free, but there is a charge for VIP and Premium viewing.

May 6-7 Dellenbach Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic & Auction, which includes a cocktail party, dinner and live and silent auctions (6) and golf tournament (7), all at Weston Hills Country Club in Weston. May 25-28 Fort Lauderdale Home Design and Remodeling Show, bringing together industry-leading professionals from the entire spectrum of home renovation products and services in South Florida, as well as celebrity presenters. Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center.
