5-K run, walk April 29 fights drunk driving

More than 3,000 walkers and runners will make strides April 29 in the ongoing fight against drunk driving during the 8th Annual La Croix & Lennox National Account Services Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5-K Brought to You by Ultimate Software.

The event, which was established in 2011, is MADD Broward County’s annual signature fundraising event to support its mission to end drunk driving. It takes place in over 90 U.S. cities, including Fort Lauderdale. Proceeds are used for community education, victim support services and youth programs.

“This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the Walk Like MADD events nationally,” says Heather Geronemus, a Plantation resident who established and has chaired the Fort Lauderdale event since 2011. “We look forward to making an even greater impact eliminating drunk driving in South Florida as this event continues to grow with the support of our entire community.”

Her father, Dr. Robert Perry Geronemus, was killed by a drunk driver in 2009.

The event also includes children’s activities, an awards ceremony, live music, vendor and educational booths and appearances by local dignitaries, including Sheriff Scott Israel, this year’s Honorary Chairperson.
