At the height of the AIDS epidemic, when the world was wondering whether a cause or cure would ever be found, Nancy McVicar landed the medical beat at the Sun Sentinel and was hooked. From the mapping of the human genome to advances in unraveling the mysteries of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s, as well as the promise of stem cells, she says she feels privileged to chronicle life-extending progress through the stories of patients, doctors and researchers. Here are Five Ways to Look and Feel Better Now that she LIKES.
Tiny digital hearing aids
Baby Boomers and younger folks exposed to a lot of loud music are experiencing hearing loss but for reasons of vanity are reluctant to do anything about it. Tiny digital hearing aids, however, widely available in South Florida, are nearly or totally invisible. One type, SoundLens, made by Starkey, has 16 channels with technology similar to Bluetooth, to capture sound from your television set so you don’t have to crank up the volume.
Same-day dental work
Digital technology also can improve your smile. If you needed a crown in the past, the dentist would give you a temporary one and you would wait two weeks while specifications for the permanent one were sent to a lab. Often the dentist had to make adjustments once it was in your mouth. Now several South Florida dental practices using CAD/CAM (computer-assisted design/computer-aided manufacturing) can do the whole process in one day in their offices.
A cool new way to trim your waistline and other flabby areas is CoolSculpting, a non-invasive way to rid your body of unwanted fat by freezing the fat cells while sparing other tissue. The FDA-cleared treatment is being offered by a few doctors in South Florida, including Dr. Jacob D. Steiger, Boca Raton; and Dr. Leyda E. Bowes, Miami. It works on love handles and abdominal fat especially well. No incision necessary.
Another cool tool, lasers such as the Zerona lipolaser painlessly trim waistlines by penetrating to the fat layer below the skin and liquefying it so it is removed as waste from the body. It is non-invasive, yet offers results similar to liposuction. Several area physicians, including those affiliated with Centers for Body Enhancement in Aventura, Parkland, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, Miami Beach, Doral and Plantation, offer the cold laser light treatment.
Fitness centers abound in South Florida, such as membership-based Orangetheory Fitness or included in many condo and residential communities, so there is no excuse for getting flabby in the first place. If you don’t like working out in the company of strangers, there are miles of walking, biking and jogging paths to pursue a fit waistline. Studies show a brisk 30-minute walk three times a week can keep your heart healthy as well. Swimming laps works, too, of course.
