Belkys Nerey answers all our questions

By Greg Carannante

City & Shore Magazine

Belkys Nerey pops off your screen with a natural appeal that’s refreshingly unnatural for a nightly news anchor. She just seems like someone you might like to know.

And South Floridians have had a good long time getting to know the hometown Hialeah girl. She joined the anchor duo of WSVN-Ch. 7’s dishy Deco Drive pop-culture show in 1997, before graduating six years later to co-anchor the evening and nightly newscasts for the Fox Miami affiliate.

Nerey’s Deco pizazz still resonates in the playful banter she shares with her news co-anchor Craig Stevens. Apparently it’s working. Their 18-years together on the broadcast, a local TV news rarity, has made them South Florida’s longest-running, English-language anchor team.

She still gets to indulge her not-so-serious side, too, hosting her popular, two-minute “Bite With Belkys” cooking segments and her Suncoast Emmy-nominated, half-hour “Bite” specials.

“Cooking doesn’t always have to be serious all the time,” says Nerey, 56. “You don’t have to be afraid of the kitchen. Some people think that they can’t do it, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, you can. If I can do it, you can do it.’”

Born in Havana, the bilingual Nerey has also covered major news stories for the station, with five regional Emmy Awards to her credit. She lives in Miami Beach with her husband, Demetri.

Her responses to our standard set of Quote Unquote questions illustrate that the engaging, breezy flair of her interview style works both ways.

Audi SUV — more car than I need but I’ve been known to troll garage sales. Shhhhh.

If you had to choose: Rocky or Raging Bull?

Rocky, DUH!
