A little bit of Art Basel in Broward

By Eric Barton
Rossetti Fine Art Gallery in Wilton Manors held its opening reception Saturday night (12/13) for Basel Broward 2014.
Gallery owner Tom Rossetti dreamed up the idea of Basel Broward to highlight the art scene here while Art Basel brings international crowds to Miami shows.  “Everyone in Miami is jumping on Art Basel, and so I just thought, ‘Miami is only 20 minutes away. Why not bring a little bit of it up here?’” Rossetti said.
The gallery received 150 entries this year and paired it down to 50 pieces from mostly local artists. Sculptor Barry Gross (https://www.facebook.com/BarryGrossGallery ) served as a judge in the juried show. Diane Lublinski won Best in Show for her ceramic sculpture “Hear My Voice.” Michael Russo captured second for his sculpture “Blessed Mary on the Verge.” William Reed took third place for his sculpture “Mushroom Gathering.” Michael Mills (https://www.facebook.com/michael.mills.315213?fref=ts ) received judge’s recognition for his photograph “Circumradiant Dawn.”
Rossetti hopes his show will spread to other galleries in coming years, creating an Art Basel offshoot north of Miami. “It’s a start,” Rossetti said. “It’s getting people thinking about Art Basel up here.”
